James Earl Rose, Jr., 86, of Charlottesville, VA, passed away on December 17, 2016 at his home. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Earl Rose and Mary Elizabeth Rose of Oxford, Ohio; and by his wife, Joanne Ramsey Rose.

Jim is survived by his son, Timothy Ramsey Rose and his wife, Margaret Williams Rose; and two grandsons that he deeply loved, William Ramsey Rose and Matthew Williams Rose of Charlottesville.

James Earl Rose, Jr.

Jim was born in the small town of Liberty, Indiana. His family later moved to Oxford, Ohio where he met Joanne at McGuffey Elementary School, a building in which his son Tim later took classes as a part of Miami University. Jim and Joanne married in 1950. During the Korean War, Jim served overseas in the U.S. Army with the 17th Infantry Regiment and at the 7th Division Headquarters. Jim went on to earn Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Education at Miami University.

Jim worked at Bedford High School in Bedford, Ohio for 31 years, and his tenure as Athletic Director and Head Basketball Coach was memorable. Surrounded by legendary coaches from a young age, whom he later joined as a member of Miami's Cradle of Coaches, Jim was able to apply what he had learned from them in ways that brought joy and pride to that community. While he was the recipient of many awards during this time, he was mostly known for his humility, wisdom, wit, kindness, depth of character and friendships, and devotion to his students. He turned down offers to coach at the collegiate level in order to focus on the boys of Bedford, whom he treasured as lifelong friends.

After retirement, Jim and Joanne moved to Aurora, Ohio before moving to Charlottesville in 2014 to be closer to family. A man of faith, we know he has joined Joanne again in heaven.

The Rose family will have a private memorial service. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Jim may be made either to The Church in Aurora, 146 S. Chillicothe Rd, Aurora, OH 44202; or to the Miami University Foundation Cradle of Coaches Fund, Department of Intercollegiate Athletics, Miami University 230 Millett Hall, Oxford, OH 45056. Condolences may be sent to his family at www.hillandwood.com
