Mr. Richard Eugene “Dick” Sontag died at his home in Mesa, Arizona in the early morning of Tuesday, December 13th at the age of 75.
Dick is survived by his children, Brent (43, Dallas, TX) and Gavin (39, and wife Kathryn Moore Sontag, Dallas, TX), his sister, Margie Pennington (71, Mesa, AZ and husband Lou Pennington), and his four grandchildren, Ryan (8), Blake (6), Laney (4) and Jackson (4 months). He is preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Isabelle Sontag (Youngstown, OH).
Dick was born on May 1, 1941 in Youngstown, OH to Ed and Isabelle. He graduated from South High School (Youngstown, OH) in 1959 and Ohio University (Athens, OH) in 1963 with a degree in business. He worked in several different fields out of college but eventually settled into being a stock broker in 1972. He married Virginia “Jeanne” Kravec in 1970 with which he had his two sons. They lived primarily in Aurora, OH during their marriage. In 2006, Dick made a move for warmer weather and settled in Mesa, Arizona to be near his sister, brother-in-law and their parents.
Many remember Dick as a high energy, funny, witty man who was passionate about sports (especially Ohio State Buckeye Football), politics, and his family throughout the years. More intimately, his sons have been thrilled to watch him grow closer and closer to Our Savior Jesus Christ over the past few years, humbling himself and taking on more of a servant’s heart. Dick sat on the Board of Directors at Mountain Vista Bible Church and truly loved the friends and relationships he built with many in the local Mesa community.
A memorial service is scheduled for December 30th at 3 pm at Mountain Vista Bible Church, with a small reception to follow. Pastor Drew Arliskas and Pastor Don Coble will lead the services. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Dick’s life. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Mountain Vista Bible Church at 10153 East Hampton Avenue, Mesa, AZ 85209. Donations can also be given online in Richard’s name at www.mvbcaz.org/online-giving/.
